While that decision may have raised a few eyebrows, Zac Lomax insists he has no hard feelings about the Dragons coach's decision.
Lomax, who committed to the Red V until at least the end of the 2025 NRL season in December, lined up in the custodian role for the Dragons' season opener against the Wests Tigers.
He was then sensationally named on the wing for round two, with McGregor re-instating Matt Dufty at fullback.
Fans would understand if Lomax felt disappointed about the move. However, the 20-year-old said he was happy to play whatever role was needed for the team.
"Mary called me in [over summer] to speak about that transition and then 'Mika' [Mikaele Ravalawa] went down early in that first game," Lomax said.
"Mary felt that the best option was to have me at wing and that's where he asked me to play. If I have to do a role for the team, and that's where he needs me to play, I'm more than happy to do that. Wherever I need to play for the team, hopefully I can do the role there."
Lomax took the chance to spend time with his family in Temora during the NRL shutdown period.
The Dragons returned to training this week and Lomax said the players were working hard ahead of the NRL's May 28 return date.
"It's been so great to see all the boys, the coaches and staff in general [this week]. To be able to get back amongst the footy environment is a really good feeling," he said.
"May 28 is going to be a massive day, not just for Dragons fans but the whole game in general."
