Yve Blake's inspiration to write FANGIRLS was initially to explore why young women get obsessed with boybands, as she found these fanatics "fascinating and strange".
"[The show] feels like a pop concert and it's about teenage girls - fundamentally it is a comedy - but then sneakily it smuggles in a greater conversation," she said.
Once delving into some research for the tongue-in-cheek look at the fan phenomenon, Blake's interest diverted to not how they behaved but instead how society describes their enthusiasm.
"We don't judge football fans for screaming, crying or even getting aggressive at the football - that's the love of the game," she said. "But we do judge fan girls for screaming at a Justin Bieber concert."
Blake said she composed the pop-drenched musical to appeal to people of all ages but also to evoke a tear from her 70-year-old dad.
FANGIRLS is at IPAC from Thursday March 18 until Sunday March 21. Recommended for ages 15 and up. www.merrigong.com.au
