At Monday night's council meeting Cr John Dorahy tabled a motion asking for a review of the parking situation around Dallas Street, near the University of Wollongong, with a view to creating a residents' parking permit scheme.
"There's a lot of challenges faced and there are many residents who are not happy and have a bit of angst against it," Cr Dorahy said of the current parking arrangements.
It's a wonderfully Kafkaesque situation we could have been in of having a residents parking permit that nobody could qualify for
- Cr David Brown
Cr Brown flagged a concern about the eligibility of the permits.
A council officer told the meeting that the regulations around parking permits meant that only those without a driveway, garage, carport or similar place to park were eligible.
Additionally the council officer said a survey of a section of Dallas Street found that no resident would have qualified for a permit.
"That was my concern, in this case we might be flagging something that we really cannot deliver," Cr Brown said.
"It's a wonderfully Kafkaesque situation we could have been in of having a residents' parking permit that nobody could qualify for."
However, Cr Brown did support a review of the parking time limits in Dallas Street.
Cr Tania Brown said "there is an inconsistency in the signage along that street", with one section having a two-hour period.
Cr Leigh Colacino supported the idea of parking permits, suggesting it could also benefit carers visiting someone in that street.
Cr Cameron Walters said the University of Wollongong needed to be involved in these discussions "because this is their parking problem in a way" and that they needed to work more with council.
"I've been round there when university session is on and I feel sorry for every single resident that lives round there," he said.
Cr Dorahy's motion was lost but a revised motion from Cr Brown, which called for a review but left out the specific suggestion of a parking permit, was passed by council.
