It has been a whirlwind year for the veteran hooker, who arrived at the Knights on loan from Brisbane last May. Less than 12 months later, McCullough will return to Newcastle as the opposition's skipper.
While only three games into his St George Illawarra career, the 31-year-old boasts a wealth of NRL experience and was given the nod after Ben Hunt was ruled out for six weeks due to an impact fracture in his fibula.
McCullough, who previously played under Griffin at the Broncos, said it was a great honour to be named as the red v's captain.
"Hook pulled me up in the ice bath the other day and asked me if I would do it," he said. "I'm obviously very excited and privileged to fill in while Ben's away, but I'm just looking forward to playing first and foremost, and repaying that faith.
"But my job doesn't change, I'll just be myself. I'll compete as hard as I can and lead with my actions rather than talking, and that's the best way to do."
