Now Wollongong City Council is moving onto the next stage of the process.
It is now seeking community feedback on the draft Planning Proposal, draft Development Control Plan chapter and draft Planning Agreement letter of offer, for the former Corrimal Coke Works site.
These documents for the former Coke Works site located at 27 Railway Street, Corrimal will be on public exhibition until Tuesday, August 31.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said it was essential community members who were interested in the proposal take the opportunity to provide their feedback directly to the council.
"These are important documents and it's crucial that our community takes the opportunity to review the proposal for the site, ask questions and provide feedback," Cr Bradbery said.
"The draft Planning Proposal provides details about changes to zoning and development controls that are being sought for the former Coke Works site to allow medium density residential development."
The draft Planning Proposal and Revised Master Plan includes among other things plans to increase the building height and floor space ratio controls and realign the North Corrimal Creek.
"The Corrimal Coke Works is an important site that has become part of the community's shared history and heritage. That's why in 2020, Council listed the site as a local heritage item in recognition of its unique industrial heritage. Importantly, the heritage listing will not be affected by the draft Planning Proposal," Cr Bradbery said.

If COVID restrictions end Council is planning to hold three in person information sessions at Corrimal Community Centre in late July so people can speak directly to council's officers.
