Respected family lawyer Timothy Horsley died in the days after Randall Gordon Stone collided with hit him on Springhill Road, Coniston shortly before 7am on November 10 last year.
Stone, 52, pleaded guilty to negligently driving occasioning death in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday.
Defence lawyer Graeme Morrison entered the plea on behalf of Stone who was excused from appearing in person.
In documents tendered to court, Mr Horsley left his home at Thirroul on his road bicycle about 5am. He was wearing a helmet, open sandals, a high visibility shirt and bicycle shorts.
About 6.55am, Mr Horsley was riding south along Springhill Road, near Keira Street, close to the gutter in lane one of two.
Travelling directly behind Mr Horsley was a red hatch back and then Stone in his Holden Rodeo duel cab ute.
The driver of the red hatch changed lanes and then Stone directly hit the rear of the Mr Horsely's bike, the documents said.
The force ejected Mr Horsley from his bike and he was thrown into the air before landing on the grass nature strip as his bike slid down the road and stopped in the middle of the two lanes.
Stone stopped driving a short distance down the road and ran back to Mr Hosley, who was unresponsive and had sustained critical injuries.
Other drivers stopped and emergency services were called while bystanders performed CPR on Mr Horsley until paramedics, who were driving past, arrived moments later.
Mr Horsley was airlifted to St George Hospital, arriving shortly after 9am. He sustained a severe traumatic brain injury, bleeding into the left side of his chest and non-significant spinal injuries.
Over the next two days, Mr Horsley's condition deteriorated and after showing no signs of brain activity his life support was removed and he died on November 13.
Police also attended the crash scene and Stone returned a negative breath test before he was taken to Wollongong Hospital for mandatory testing.
A crime scene was established and the car was towed to Albion Park Police Station to be mechanically examined.
Stone was "extremely distraught" and "in shock" so he was taken home to be interviewed by police at a later date. His mobile phone was also seized.
Stone went to Wollongong Police Station on January 21 this year to be interviewed but he declined to answer questions and was charged.
Mr Horsley was a family law specialist with extensive experience and ran Johnson Horsley Lawyers in Wollongong with his wife Kerrie.
Stone will be sentenced on August 24.
