A storm front moved through just after 3pm, bringing rain, thunder, lightning and, in some areas, a lashing of ice.
"Just drove through the hail in Woonona," Sally Warren wrote on the Mercury's Facebook page.
"Temperature dropped from 20 to 12 degrees."
Hail was also reported in Bulli and Bellambi.
A severe weather warning for severe thunderstorms remains current for Wollongong.
The thunderstorm is likely to produce damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours, the Bureau of Meteorology warned.
