Steven Allan Murray, 38, was denied release in Wollongong Local Court because he could not find an alternative place to live following the alleged incident on Saturday.
Documents tendered to court said Murray was "ranting and raving" in the common area of his public housing unit complex about 7.30am.
Police allege he was armed with a one-metre hollow square steel post before he knocked on one of his neighbour's doors and said, "I'm gonna kill you", which was overheard by another resident.
The witness claimed Murray was holding the post over his shoulder, which caused him fear, before he smashed a glass top of an outdoor table in the common area.
Neither neighbour saw Murray smash the table but heard the impact and saw shattered glass on the floor.
Police arrived a short time later to find Murray allegedly ranting and holding a steel post before he was arrested and charged with affray and intimidation.
Murray allegedly admitted to holding the post and making "general" threats out loud, with police observing he was restless and erratic.
In court yesterday, police prosecutor Sergeant David Weaver opposed bail noting there was a risk Murray would commit further offences and had previously not complied with bail conditions.
Magistrate Claire Girotto refused to grant him release to live at his home because there had been ongoing disputes at the complex.
She said if he could find another place to stay she would reconsider the bail application.
The case was adjourned to Wednesday.
