Major works to improve facilities for fishers and visitors at Lake Illawarra’s Windang foreshore are paying off as plenty of people take advantage of the stunning location.
A new seawall, timber fishing platform, fish-cleaning table, retaining walls, pathways, and lighting have been built off Judbooley Parade.
The $485,000 project involved Wollongong City Council, the Lake Illawarra Authority (LIA) and the Department of Primary Industries.
Damien Skeen, from Dean’s Tackle Outdoors, praised the new facilities when the Advertiser spoke to him on a sunny day last Thursday.
‘‘I think it’s great, it [the fishing platform] is getting plenty of use at the moment.
‘‘It’s well utilised by fishers and the general public being able to look over the edge [of the lake]. It will draw people to the area.’’
Mr Skeen’s only criticism was the length of time it took to build the platform.
He said there were plenty of fish in the lake, and the entrance was working well.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said Windang was a gem, offering some of the best fishing on the coast.
‘‘With a new fishing platform, pathways and an improved expanded park area, families and visitors to the area will find it much easier to enjoy this southern gateway to the city.’’
LIA chairman Doug Prosser said it was pleasing to see the works completed, with LIA planning having started 10 years ago.
Other improvements completed previously at Windang include picnic shelters, a barbecue and the planting of Norfolk Island pine trees.
