Police allege Aaron William Hockman, 35, used a black texta to scribble ‘‘Azza loves Tania’’ on an advertising sign in the Telstra phone box while waiting for a train at Wollongong Railway Station on Thursday afternoon.
Officers from the Police Transport Command noticed Hockman’s penmanship, and approached him. When spoken to about the scribble he apologised and handed over the texta.
But when the police searched Hockman’s backpack they found two knife-type implements inside, which Hockman allegedly told them were for his own protection.
Hockman was arrested after becoming agitated and police feared he would become violent. He allegedly wrestled with them while resisting being handcuffed.
Hockman appeared in Port Kembla Local Court on Friday.
Magistrate Michael Stoddart agreed to release him on conditional bail so he could be assessed for a drug treatment program.
The case will return to court later this month.
