Fire and Rescue NSW is gearing up for the 2015 firefighter recruitment campaign - and this year, they're looking to attract more women.
Wollongong Fire Station's Letitia Harris has worked with Fire and Rescue NSW for the past 16 years. In 2013, she also represented FRNSW in the World Rescue Organisation Rescue Challenge in England, which she described as the experience of a lifetime.
"If there is a woman out there who is sporty, or outdoorsy - if they want a job that challenges them every day; that is different every day - this is for them," she said.
The recruitment campaign will open applications in May. Thousands of would-be firefighters are expected to apply.
"We are particularly keen to reach out to fit and healthy women, most of whom have probably never thought of becoming a firefighter," FRNSW Commissioner Greg Mullins said.
"There are hundreds of women who have taken that step over the last 30 years."
Ms Harris hadn't considered firefighting until receiving a pamphlet in the mail at her Unanderra home. For her, the best part of the job is the camaraderie.
"Everyone gets on so well. It's a real team environment, and there's a great chance to build strong relationships with your crew," she said. "I can go home at the end of the day and know that I'm making a difference."
Candidates need to complete an online application and undergo a series of tests.
