The battle to find the "fittest athletes in the world" comes to Wollongong this weekend for the CrossFit Games' South Pacific regional titles.
Many of the fittest athletes from Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific regions will converge on WIN Entertainment Centre where they will push themselves to their physical and mental limits.
Held over three days, the event is split into categories for men, women and teams, who will test themselves in seven different categories, each including various disciplines such as weight lifting, running, sit-ups, squats and rope climbing.
At the end of the three days, the top five from each category will progress to the World Games in Los Angeles later this year.
Ben Garard, owner of the BENt on CrossFit gym in Mittagong, finished second in Australia, and a very respectable 31st in the world, in the five-week international CrossFit Games Open competition held earlier this year.
Garard said he was confident he would acquit himself well in Wollongong, and hopefully be one of the five men to represent Australia at the CrossFit Games in LA, a long-time goal of his.
"I was determined to go sub six minutes and although it really hurt, I got 5:48 so that was a very satisfying way to round off the Open. I've put myself in a good position now going into regionals and I can really focus my energy on that," he said.
"I gave each of the five workouts in the Open everything I had and I'm really happy with the results and my progress in the sport over the past three years.
"My goal is to train hard and stay healthy, so that I can give this year's regionals my best effort and be in the top five at the end of it to secure my first trip to the CrossFit Games in California."
CrossFit representative David Hogan encouraged locals to come along to see one of the fastest growing spectator sports in the world.
"The atmosphere at the games is terrific," Hogan said.
"You get to see elite athletes pushing themselves to, and sometimes even beyond, their limits.
"I've been involved in the event for four years now, and each year seems to get bigger and better."
The CrossFit South Pacific Regionals will be held at the WIN Entertainment Centre from May 22-24.
