In the first of three games beteween the two teams this week, the Hawks were let down by poor shooting, the team making only 33 per cent of their shots.
The Hawks were led by new import signing Lance Hurdle, who top scored with 15 points in his debut outing for the club.
Guard Rhys Martin contributed 13 points and Larry Davidson picked up 11 rebounds.
Forward Mika Vukona top-scored for the reigning NBL champions with 16 points.
The two sides meet again in Dunedin on Thursday and wrap up their three-game series in Hamilton on Saturday.
