Twelve brightly coloured flags will be erected every time a working bee or activity is being held at the community garden on the corner of Wattle Road and Carrington Street, specifically every Tuesday when volunteers flock to the garden for weekly activities and creativity.
The garden were able to purchase the flags following a recent Illawarra Soup Night at Warilla Crew Park Hall, where community groups can pitch a new idea which would improve the community and all money raised from the $5 dinner goes to funding the project.
Garden program co-ordinator, Darren Bell said the idea for the flags was to connect the community with their local garden.
“We wanted something festive and exciting to get the attention of people that drive past,” he said.
“Often people drive past and see activity but they don’t know what’s going on. And this cheap and easy signage-type idea will get their attention and let them know when we are here.”
Every Tuesday the garden hosts a working bee throughout the day where people can learn about permaculture as well as art, cooking, vegetable gardening creativity and occasionally meet with special guests.
Mr Bell also said that people can volunteer at the garden to pay-off their State Debt Recovery fines and payments through the Work and Development Order program which also ran every Tuesday.
