More than $1 million has been offered throughout 41 mostly regional council areas in NSW as part of a new Southern Phone Community Grant Scheme.
The program will feature the telecommunications provider supporting specific community projects in the Kiama municipality area to the tune of $25,000 this year.
Southern Phone chairman Bill Hilzinger presented the community grant cheque to Kiama Mayor Brian Petschler at the Kiama council chambers on Tuesday.
The community groups and key projects to benefit include; Kiama Lions Club, upgrade to caravan equipment; Kiama-Jamberoo RSL Sub-Branch, installation of disabled access and security fencing at the Jamberoo RSL Hall; Kiama Lions Club, provision of a specialist incubator for chicken rearing program; and Jamberoo Scouting, upgrade of camping equipment and training facilities.
Others were Sing Australia Kiama, provide assistance with community singing events; Kiama Preschool Inc., provision of a carbolite awning; 1st Kiama Scout Group - Scouts Australia, provision of community hall equipment; Lions Club of Gerringong Inc., construction of a storage room; Kiama Community Garden Inc., hothouse refurbishment; Jubilee Grove Landcare, installation of a bench garden seat; Rotary Club of Kiama Inc., barbecue trailer refurbishment; Kiama Uniting Church Men's Shed, provision of a heart defibrillator; and Kiama Show Society, provision of pavilion trestle tables.
Southern Phone Company was formed in 2002 after the receipt of funding from the federal government’s Networking the Nation program.
A public company, Southern Phone is owned by 41 local councils, each of which has an equal shareholding.
During the past 13 years, Southern Phone has grown to be the second largest home phone provider in regional Australia and provides fixed line.
The company is based in Moruya and employs more than 135 staff.
