Kiama council hosted a reception at the council chambers for those within the municipality who have received honours such as the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) or Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) since 2012.
Kiama Mayor Brian Petschler said the council had hosted such events in the past to acknowledge those who had received these awards under the Australian honours system.
A number of them attended the reception.
In 2012, honours recipients were John Pickett (AM), who was unable to attend the reception, and Harry Sprintz (OAM), who was recognised for service to architecture.
In 2013, Dr Robert Barr received an AM for significant service to engineering; OAMs were awarded to John Kaehler (for service to veterans and their families), Malcolm Weir (service to the Gerringong community) and the late Dr Artis Medenis (service to veterinary science and the community).
In 2014, Raymond Whiting was given an OAM for service to the Gerringong community, and Lake Illawarra Local Area Commander, Superintendent Wayne Starling was awarded the Australian Police Medal.
This year, Peter McGlinchey was given an OAM for service to the communities of Kiama and the Shoalhaven.
