A hamstring injury has forced the 35-year-old to miss the Hawks’ past three games against the Perth Wildcats and home and away fixtures against Adelaide 36ers.
Illawarra went 1-2 with Penney off the court, having dropped both of their away fixtures.
It is hoped Penney will be fit in time for Thursday’s clash with Melbourne United, but he won’t rushed back into the line-up.
“It is a day-by-day thing,” coach Rob Beveridge said.
“He has been doing rehab every day and did his first running session on Sunday night.
“Every day he is getting better, but whether or not he will be ready for Thursday we don’t know.”
Penney’s influence of offence has been missed during his absence.
He leads the Hawks in scoring so far this campaign with an average of 20.7 points per contest.
