Following legal changes retail traders in the CBD will open on December 26 as well as December 27 when Voyager of the Seas arrives.
Shops will open from 9am to 5.30pm and Wollongong City Centre is offering free parking. There is also live coverage of the Boxing Day cricket test from Melbourne to further help activate the city.
Wollongong Central regional general manager Antony Keenan said locals and visitors supported the new trading day in large numbers last year and expectations are even higher for 2016.
Parking at each of Wollongong Central’s carparks is free all day on both December 26 and 27. And for those who want to take a break from shopping the Boxing Day cricket test between Australia and Pakistan will be screened from a six metre shipping container in upper Crown Street Mall each day from 10.30am. Mr Keenan said the Boxing Day sales were an ingrained part of the Australian Christmas tradition. Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said it was great that Wollongong people no longer needed to miss out on the same opportunity as people living in major centres all over Australia.
“Everyone expects the shops to be open on Boxing Day. It is part of the tradition of getting a bargain. Obviously there are people who just love the idea. It is almost traditional now that the Boxing Day sales are a part of the retail experience,” Cr Bradbery said.
Cr Bradbery said it was great shops were also open when Voyager of the Seas arrives two days after Christmas. It will show Wollongong as a sophisticated city with many options to shop and dine any day of the week.
