In addition to the traditional business lunch on May 12 put on by the business appeal committee of Michael Bassingthwaighte, Nathan Heard, David Apolo, Mike Archer, Monique Harper-Richardson and Andew Manson there is a Blues Brothers show to bookend the annual doorknock on June 2.
Stacks Heard McEwan covers the cost of the lunch at City Beach Function Centre where business people make donations towards the valuable work done assisting 10,000 people in the region. The Salvos help people with food, furniture, clothing, accommodation and bills. Women and children affected by domestic violence are given safe housing and support. And children given breakfast at school.
But Salvation Army officer Karen Walker said the Blues Bros show was another welcome addition that would extend the fundraising beyond the door knock on the last weekend in May. “It is fantastic to have a new idea to help us raise funds towards the Red Shield Appeal. The concert will be a week after the appeal and will be like a wrap up celebration. We are still after more people to door knock. All the money raised stays in the Illawarra. It will help our women’s refuge and our First Floor program.”
Musician Neil Taylor said the dinner show will be at Centro CBD and there will be a few surprises. “We want to complement and help raise funds for what the Salvos are doing in the community. “It is the Sweet Home Chicago Blues Bros dinner show which compliments the Blues Bros movie but we add in some other songs from artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Stray Cats. And we have got a Great Gatsby slant on what we do. It is a 13 piece band and from what I am told it is the first one ever from the Illawarra.”

Mr Taylor said the Sweet Home Chicago Blues Bros Show Band was launched in February and this will only be the third performance in the region. He and fellow band member Colin Hardcastle (Elwood) said the show was something the musicians involved wanted to do regularly because it was something they really enjoyed.
Mr Hardcastle said it was fantastic to be involved in something that does so much good. “I love supporting a charity like this”.
