It’s all part of the Anywhere Theatre festival, which will bring comedy, dance, circus and music to unexpected places from August 17-27.
Performances will include a cappella in the art gallery, burlesque in a 30s themed bar, masquerade through the mall and a series of events for kids and adult held in the festival hub, at the arts precinct.
Elsewhere, Bryson Grenfell, Sam Sweeting and Adam O'Brien (pictured) will bring a new perspective on the afterlife to the Wesley church, with absurdist comedy Albert & Jameson: A Play with Vampires. And a dancer with “varicose veins, bung feet, fibromyalgia” and other telltale signs of ageing will celebrate her Hot Bod 65 in 34 degree heat at Wollongong Yoga Centre.
The quirky event has been held in Brisbane for the past seven years and expanded into other areas in Queensland this year, all in the name of bringing theatre to the masses who might not ordinarily frequent stage shows.
Founder Paul Osuch said the no-theatre theatre idea started when Sir Ian McKellen was touring Waiting for Godot worldwide and couldn’t find a venue.
“We figured if a well-known international actor had trouble finding a traditional theatre to perform in then it was likely that many not so big acts have the same problem,” he said.
The festival will include more than 80 performances, many from local artists, and tickets are on sale at anywheretheatre.com
