KIAMA ROTARY
Kiama Rotary will host the Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) Eastern Region’s annual meeting in Kiama on August 5-6. RAWCS supports Australian Rotarians and Rotary Clubs in assisting disadvantaged communities and individuals around the world with humanitarian aid projects. In 2016, RAWCS provided more than $31.3 million for overseas humanitarian aid projects and undertook 408 overseas aid projects in 22 countries.
Our club has a long history of supporting RAWCS projects. Many of our members have worked on overseas humanitarian projects. Particularly in Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste. Current Kiama Rotary President, Lloyd Chatfield is Eastern Region’s Volunteer Co-ordinator while Past President Graham Morphet and Rotarian Bobbie East both remain very active in supporting RAWCS projects.
KIAMA LIONS
One of the key purposes of any Lions Club is "to assist financially, culturally, socially and morally the disabled, disadvantaged and infirm of the community both directly and also indirectly". For Kiama Lions the support of a host of local causes and projects makes up a substantial part of our overall work. However, we are part of an Australia-wide and much bigger international organisation and there are many ways that we regularly support the work of Lions in that broader context.
At our recent changeover dinner Kiama Lions reported that we had supported over a dozen Lions Australian and international programs with objectives focusing on, for example, Children's Mobility, Drug Awareness, Childhood Cancer Research, Save Sight and Cord Blood. Our support of the Australian Lions Foundation meant that many worthwhile emergency and other projects in Australia could assist thousands of people in need or help to build local resources. This works both ways as the local Lions Carers Respite Cottage project was the recipient of a grant from this foundation.
