Rotary Park provides family facilities for the community to enjoy and was established by the club in 1972. The club decided that this latest project would not only provide a much-needed upgrade to the park, but also provide the club with ongoing active service by maintaining the garden.
The garden enhances the natural beauty of the railway station whilst giving the Rotary Club so much appreciated exposure. A commemorative plaque has been mounted on site to highlight this memorable event.
"The Rotary Club of Shellharbour City is very proud of this new native garden,” club president Larry How said. “Its acquisition for the people it has served for the past 50 years, will be a long and ongoing reminder of the great history and service of Rotary in the community."
In June 2017, of the 62 clubs in this Rotary District, Shellharbour was awarded the very prestigious accolade for the “Most Outstanding and Significant Community Service Project” from Rotary International in recognition of the Rotary Park project.
Projects completed by the club during its 50 years of service include “Paint Your Heart Out”, with more than 30 houses painted for the needy or handicapped; construction of an entrance to Bass Point Reserve, construction of numerous toilet blocks; BBQ shelters and picnic tables and a helipad at Shellharbour Hospital. The club also helps conduct the Shellharbour air show and the Albion Park rodeo.
The club provides ongoing support to local schools, youth groups, various youth projects, training and awareness forums and awards, as well as support to the Shellharbour Hospital, the Camp Quality Convoy and Australia Day Breakfast by the Lake.
The club has been operating a monthly market in Shellharbour for many years and is excited to announce that a new revamped market, usually held on the last Sunday of the month, is to commence on September 24 at the new location of Pioneer Park, Shellharbour, to be known as the Village Market Place. Current, potential stall holders and visitors are all very welcome – find us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/shellrotary.
