The northbound truck was turning from Thomson St onto Bong Bong St when the driver lost control about 12.45pm Monday.
It took out several panels of 2.4-metre tall “jail-style” school fencing, before coming to rest across a footpath.
Kiama fire station commander Terry Dryburgh said the fence fell into an unoccupied area of the school grounds, and no one was injured.
“It was very fortunate,” he said.
“Two hours later and the street would usually be full of parents and kids.
“The street’s usually full of parked cars and everyone picking up their kids, so it’s happened at a good time.”
The male driver freed himself from the truck by the time emergency services arrived.
NSW Ambulance paramedics assessed him for minor injuries, but did not require transport to hospital.
The Mercury understands the council-operated truck was carrying household waste and was about three-quarters full when it overturned.
It crashed into an area that is used for the school’s “bush tucker” garden.
Kiama Public School has advised school buses will operate this afternoon as usual, and “kiss and drop” arrangements will not be affected.
However the westbound lane of Bong Bong St is expected to remain closed until after school pick-up time.
The school has enlisted extra teachers to monitor the area this afternoon.
