Dr Gardiner was the founding ambassador of the annual Mother’s Day Fun Run which now continues to be organised by her good friend Grant Plecas to raise money for the the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).
The proceeds fund research into breast cancer.
Hundreds of men and women wore pink tutus made famous by Dr Gardiner as a tribute to her great legacy.
Mr Plecas announced her sons were present and invited everyone at Galvin Park to take a quiet moment to think of someone they know who has or is suffering from breast cancer.
There was also an address by Dr Kara Perrow who spoke of her research. Dr Perrow recently won the very first Dr Margaret Gardiner scholarship named in her honour at an annual lunch hosted by the Illawarra International Women’s Day Committee at the WIN Entertainment Centre.
