The Bureau of Meteorology issued a gale force wind warning for the Illawarra, South Coast and and Sydney coasts until at least Saturday afternoon.
“Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming in the following areas. The dominant wave direction is from the south,” the bureau said.
Southern-facing beaches are likely to bear the brunt of the powerful conditions, with sets in excess of four metres predicted for some areas.
With waves and wind stronger offshore, boat users are being urged to be particularly mindful of the conditions throughout the weekend and exercise extreme caution if crossing river bars.
NSW Surf Life Saving spokesman Andrew Ugarte says volunteer patrols have finished for the season and only a few NSW beaches are manned by lifeguards.
"While the strong winds and large waves are likely to deter many people from entering the water over the next couple of day, it is important that beachgoers are still mindful of the conditions," he said in a statement.
