Surf Life Saving NSW held an open day at Sandon Point on Sunday to showcase what they do including dummy rescues, nippers activities and marine vehicles.

SLS Illawarra duty controller Anthony Turner said windy and wild surf conditions were perfect to show the public how dramatic the ocean can change in a short period of time, as well as easily showing where rips form.

Meantime he said they wanted members from the west as they were their biggest target area to spread messages about beach safety.

“We’ll be using the footage of today to use for promotional material for local schools and universities in the Western Sydney region next [to entice new members],” Mr Turner said.

Members also don’t need to be buff athletes, he said, but can come from all walks of life and in different shapes and sizes.

Since the volunteer life saving season began at the start of October, the region has already seen one drowning.
