Illawarra Hawks: Dave Andersen facing sanction after fiery clash with Adelaide

Andersen was called for an unsportsmanlike foul on 36ers guard Nathan Sobey as he drove the basket late in third quarter, and was then hit with a technical for his role in the ensuing melee.

That scuffle was sparked, in part, by Sobey allegedly kicking out at Andersen with his foot in response to the hard foul, also earning himself a technical.

In a statement released on Monday, the NBL said its Game Review Panel will look at the incident involving Andersen and Sobey and determine whether charges will be laid on Tuesday.

Andersen’s ejection was the second dismissal of the game after Adelaide import Jacob Wiley was marched early in the second quarter after picking up two technicals in a single incident.

The statement said the a review of the officiating found Wiley should not have been given his marching orders.

“After reviewing the Round 7 game between the Illawarra Hawks and Adelaide 36ers, the NBL has determined that the ejection of Jacob Wiley was an incorrect decision,” the statement read. 

“The player should not have received two technical fouls, and instead should have been assessed as a single technical foul for his role in the incident.”

Wiley was hit with the technicals after sharing some heated words with Hawks guard Jordair Jett, with Tim Coenraad also hit with a questionable tech despite his seemingly innocuous role in the same scuffle.

It proved a big, with the veteran forward the third player ejected on a flopping call in the fourth quarter, but the review deemed the calls on Andersen and Coenraad were both correct.
