YOU don’t have to be a genius to know that losing games can put a dent in a player’s confidence. It’s a given.

Coaches don’t have an endless well of confidence to go to either. A string of losses, or wildly inconsistent results like we’ve produced this season, obviously affect us as much as players.
The last two seasons have been very difficult, almost uncharted waters for me in my career. When you’ve been around as long as I have, you’re experienced enough to know what works and what doesn’t.
That doesn’t mean doubts don’t creep into your thinking. This year we’ve been inconsistent and at the end of the day, the buck stops with the head coach.
We’ve had some unbelievable performances but also some all-time low performances and doubt does creep in. I have second-guessed myself at times.
We’ve played those horrible games that bring sleepless nights. You literally get one or two hours sleep because you’re mind is constantly asking ‘what can I do, what can I change?’
Adelaide last week was one of them We were very good but we had a really, really bad five minutes that hurt us. We didn’t follow the game plan and it bit us on the bum.
A couple of days later we went up against the number one team in the country in Sydney and we dominated the game. They’ve got the most talent, they’ve been playing really well, but we had a game plan and executed it to a tee.
It was an incredible performance and games like that make you walk away thinking ‘maybe I can coach. Maybe I do have something left in tank and something more to offer’.
What might surprise people is that the result was no surprise to me. When it comes to those top four sides we have runs on the board.
We’ve beaten every one them and we’re the only team in the league who’s done that. When we step out on the floor against those sides I’ve got every confidence we can get the job done.
The challenge we have failed to meet this season is the one we face against New Zealand on Friday. They’re locked in that playoff battle like us and we’ve let ourselves against that opposition this season.
Our first game against them was a case in point. It was a pitiful effort and we got the result we deserved for that type of effort – or lack thereof.
They’re the only team we haven’t beaten this season so it’s a bucket list game for us. People will say we “pinched one” off Sydney last week but it was a win we earned. We’ll need to do the same against the Breakers.
We’ve got them three times down the stretch of the season. We need to win and remind ourselves that we do have something left in the tank and we do have something left to offer this season.
