4.30pm: A paraglider has been cut from his parachute and plucked from the water by a lifeguard after he crashed into the ocean at Stanwell Park on Thursday afternoon.
Emergency services – including three ambulances and a rescue helicopter – are on the scene of the incident, which happened about 4.10pm.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said initial reports suggested the paraglider, a man believed to be aged in his 50s, crashed into the ocean near the base of Bald Hill.
Lifeguards on a jet-ski helped retrieve the man from the water.
The lifeguards were able to cut the man free from his parachute and rush him into shore.
The spokesman said the man was conscious and breathing.
The extent of his injuries, if any, are not yet known.
However, it is understood the man has swallowed a large amount of water.
The rescue helicopter has been tasked from Wollongong and is expected to land at the Stanwell Park beach reserve.
More to come.
