In another life as a corporate coach, I frequently found myself working with professionals who were investing in their own careers. This investment often involved extra study aimed at increasing their qualifications so as to meet or exceed the professional benchmarks set by their employer. My advice to them often came back to three ideas: your study will provide you with "knowledge" and you will graduate "knowing a lot", but this is just a starting point. You will gain employment and your "knowledge" will be the basis upon which you gain "skills"; so now you "know" and can "do" a lot. But we have reached the part of this journey where you begin to use your "knowledge" and "skills" in a variety of contexts, and that's called "experience"; it's what sets you apart and causes people to listen to you.
At this point, you're probably asking what my story thus far has to do with Rotary. Rotary as an organisation is a perfect setting to further expand your "experience" and in a way that will put your "leadership" skills to the test. Rotary's strength is our ability to insert small groups of Rotarians into community events where we become influencers for change. The "experience" coming from that community involvement is transferable to your career. Should you wish to develop your career through a Rotary connection, give me a call and I'll answer any questions you may have. It's easier than you think. John Clarke M:0419 546 094.
KIAMA LIONS CLUB
This is the last week of this Lions year. Because we are a big club most of the decisions are made by a board of which about half change over each year. This maintains continuity whilst at the same time having a fresh input of ideas and initiatives. We now have a new President for 2019-20 and a new board who were inducted at the Changeover meeting last Thursday -We wish them every success for their year.
Last Friday we had a BBQ at Bunnings. We are getting familiar with the set-up there and most members enjoy meeting folks going into and out of the store. Last month two members had a meeting with Tomra, the company who operate the bottle and can recycling facilities in town. We look after their area outside Woolworths and have been successful using the facility as a fund-raiser. It is important that our Lions Club is not just known for its barbecue prowess.
