NBL free agency delayed as LaMelo Ball circles

The process had already been delayed from March 30 to May 1 as a result of uncertainty caused by the spread of COVID-19.

That move was before the NBL made sweeping changes to contracts for next season, with players agreeing to take a pay cut and those under contract provided the opportunity to opt out of their agreements.

With players given until Monday to make a decision, a further delay to free agency was always likely.

NBL commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said the move provides players and clubs with certainty before they commit to new contracts.

""We believe these are sensible and workable arrangements that balance the interests of the clubs and the players as we all face the challenges of COVID-19 together," Loeliger said.

The spread of coronavirus has been stated as the official reason for the free agency delay, however it does also provide the league with extra time to finalise the Hawks ownership structure.

While Mat Campbell has been employed as an interim general manager, it would be near impossible for him to finalise contracts with the team currently in administration.

A joint LaMelo Ball and Tory Lavalle consortium remains the leading contender to purchase the Hawks, with father LaVar telling AAP his son is ready, willing and able to purchase the team.

The completion of the deal has been held up due to the hurdles thrown up by coronavirus, LaVar said.

"We are just waiting to see what they (NBL) say," LaVar told AAP.

"He is interested in buying the Hawks," he added. "One of the things I told my boys is ownership is a big thing."
