The union representing retail employees (SDA) is urging travellers from Sydney coming into regional areas such as the Illawarra and Shoalhaven to please wear a mask before entering shops.
It follows SDA polling conducted by Essential, that reveals 23 per cent of people in NSW believe being forced to wear a mask is an infringement on their personal freedom.
SDA NSW secretary Bernie Smith said a COVID-19 outbreak had the potential to seriously devastate regional towns on the South Coast and other parts of NSW still recovering from the bush fire crisis.
Mr Smith said the union is asking anyone travelling from Sydney, particularly hotspot areas, to please wear a mask before entering a shop.
In doing so he said they would help protect not only retail workers, but the wider community in those areas.
"And remember that the frontline workers that you see when you walk into a shop are just out there trying to do the best job they can," Mr Smith said.
