Wollongong City Council has announced the winners of its first Creative Wollongong Short Film competition.
The film competition was aimed at young people of the region between the ages of eight and 19 years.
There were two categories, for filmmakers aged from eight to 12 years and for filmmakers aged 13 to 19 years, along with the additional award of best performance in a leading or supporting role.
The 'best performance in a leading or supporting role' winner was 14-year-old Nerida Field, for her performance in Fever Dream.
Dapto resident Nerida said Fever Dream was a one-person operation, created over a two-week period.
She played the film's only character, Rebecca, and also wrote, directed, filmed and edited it.
"I did the whole thing by myself, and filmed it all on my phone," she said.
"I always have weird, crazy dreams at night, and I wanted to do a freaky sort of film about some of the dreams that I have.
"It didn't really have to make sense... Just like when you have a dream."
Nerida has a keen interest in filmmaking, and hopes to further pursue the artform.
"I just love watching movies, reading about them and making them as well," she said.
"I really like filmmaking, and just the whole production side of it."
Each of the winners receives a prize of $150.
The other finalists were as follows:
Filmmakers aged 8-12: winner: Ava Dupont for Rock My World; runner-up: Felix Williams for Dance Battle.
Filmmakers aged 13-19: winner: Beau Ritchie for The Diet; runner-up: Mala Elith for Orchestra of Isolation.
The competition's judging panel included prominent Australian TV and film actor Jake Ryan.
The winning films will be released on Creative Wollongong's Facebook page and will also be screened in 2021 as a part of a council youth film festival.
