Emergency services have described the scenes of a fatal accident in Wollongong as "carnage".
A woman has died and two others remain in hospital after they were struck by a car while walking along a footpath near the Collegians Club and Overboard surf store on Saturday night.
Emergency services were called to Flinders Street about 10.30pm, and found a 19-year-old woman suffering multiple critical injuries.
Officers from Wollongong Police Area Command performed CPR until the arrival of paramedics.
Two others who were injured were also treated at the scene before being taken to Wollongong Hospital, where the woman died a short time later.
An 18-year-old woman remains in hospital and is being treated for a fractured pelvis, while a 21-year-old man had a fractured leg and ribs.
A fourth pedestrian - a 20-year-old man - managed to escape injury.
"On arrival, as you can imagine, there was a lot of carnage," NSW Ambulance Acting Inspector Oliver Aleman told the Mercury.
"There was a lot of patients lying around. We managed to triage and assess and treat them on scene."
Seven NSW Ambulance crews were tasked, including one critical care crew.
"It's a horrible scene to come to," the Acting Inspector said.
"We've had to use lots of resources - with police and firies were also assisting us all throughout."
Officers from Wollongong Police District were told a Toyota Camry sedan was being driven south along Flinders Street when the driver allegedly lost control.
It reportedly then ran off the road and struck the four pedestrians on the footpath, before hitting a power pole.
The Toyota driver, an 18-year-old man, and front seat passenger, a 21-year-old man, were arrested and taken to Wollongong Hospital for mandatory testing. The driver is also being treated for minor injuries and remains under police guard.
The passenger has since been taken to Wollongong Police Station where he remains.
A second passenger has also been assisting police with their inquiries.
Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit have examined the scene and are appealing for anyone with information about the incident, or who has dashcam vision, to contact Wollongong Police or the CIU.
