Business development manager Brett Rodwell said the idea is to provide an insight into what's required to be a successful candidate and included input from TAFE Illawarra, HVTC and KJ staff.
After spending a couple of hours at the yard and KJ Scaffolding putting on lunch the group visited Port Kembla Coal Terminal and Quattro Ports.
KJ Industrial Scaffolding specialises in commercial, mining and industrial scaffolding and has a history of taking on 10 to 12 trainees a year.
Mr Rodwell said the business is planning to take on that many again in 2021 and will continue providing opportunities to young adults and school leavers for many more years to come.
He said Friday went so well with such an enthusiastic group of participants KJ is planning to make Try Scaffolding for a Day an annual event in the months leading up each year's traineeship program intake.
"This was promoted through Warrigal Employment and the Education Department," Mr Rodwell said.
"We will be taking 12 people into the traineeship program next year."
In 2005 KJ showed it was an industry leader in skills training when it developed, with the help of HVTC, TAFE Illawarra and Training Services NSW, a customised scaffolding qualification called a Certificate III in Scaffolding.
The certificate provides skill sets such as basic and intermediate scaffolding, dogging, rigging, forklift and elevated work platform. This was a much-needed qualification to ensure there was a pipeline of skilled workers for the growing business.
Mr Rodwell said Port Kembla Coal Terminal and Quattro Ports were very supportive on Friday by allowing the group to see what they could expect on a location where scaffolding is used.
He said most of the group were in their late teens and early 20s.
"One of our trainees who came through this program who is now an inspector with out company, Callan Cuthbert, spoke to them today along with TAFE Illawarra teacher and coordinator Robert Stephens," Mr Rodwell said.
Details about the scaffolding traineeship program are being posted on the HVTC website.
