No arrests had been made as of Wednesday afternoon, but Lake Illawarra District Commander Detective Superintendent Dean Smith said they knew exactly who was driving the vehicle at the time on Monday afternoon.
"A number of witnesses have come forward and as a result of our investigations we have identified the vehicle and the current owner, and the driver of the vehicle at the time of the incident," he said.
"People are responsible for what happens when they drive motor vehicles, if they are involved in a collision it is their responsibility to stop whether that is a minor or a major incident.
"For those people that leave the scene, the offences and consequences are serious, we will find those individuals and we will prosecute those individuals."
He said the 15-year-old victim required surgery for leg injuries sustained in Monday's accident, but was "recovering well".
Police said the teen was riding a bicycle near the intersection of Wall Street and Ponsford Street around 3.30pm, and was hit by a green Mazda tabletop utility.
They were told the driver called out to the teen before driving away. By the time emergency services arrived on scene the driver of the vehicle was nowhere to be seen.
Det Supt Smith asked anyone with dash-cam footage from the incident to come forward to police or contact Crime Stoppers.
