On Thursday, hotel brand NH Hotels announced plans for its foray into the Australian market, with the upcoming launch of "NH Hotel Wollongong".
NH Hotel Group is part of Minor Hotels, which operates Oaks Hotels, Resorts and Suites; and Avani Hotels and Resorts in Australia.
The Wollongong hotel is being flagged as an Australian first for NH Hotel Group's "upscale and midscale brand".
If approved, the new development is set for completion in spring 2023 and will be located on the vacant site, formerly home to a car yard, at the intersection of Burelli and Corrimal streets.
The 14-storey hotel would join an existing portfolio of more than 243 NH Hotels properties globally.
NH Hotel Wollongong would feature 240 contemporary hotel rooms, state-of-the-art conference and event facilities, flexible working space and a fully equipped gym.
The hotel's restaurant and bar will offer all day dining.
The DA for the hotel, which has an estimated cost of more than $41.5 million, was lodged late last year.
Developer of NH Hotel Wollongong, Peter Hickey of Held Property said the DA was booked for a June determination, "following a comprehensive design process having been undertaken prior to being lodged".
"The project has the full support of council who understand the significance of the project for the development of Wollongong," he told the Mercury.
A Wollongong City Council spokesperson said council was in the process of assessing the development application.
"Following the completion of the assessment, council will prepare a report for the Southern Regional Planning Panel, who will determine the outcome of the application," the spokesperson said.
Craig Hooley, chief operating officer for Minor Hotels Australia and New Zealand said NH Wollongong's position in the heart of Burelli Street "renders it the ideal location for corporate travellers wanting to be close by to the office, and for leisure travellers wanting to be in the heart of the pulsing CBD".
In a statement, Mr Hickey and fellow developer Joseph Di Girolamo of Next Group said they were "thrilled to be working with NH Hotels to deliver Wollongong's first purpose built, landmark hotel in the emerging commercial CBD, with its premium accommodation and restaurant offering set to serve locals and visitors to the city alike".
