From mid morning motorists returning home from the June long weekend were experiencing significant delays travelling northbound through Nowra, over the Shoalhaven River bridge and through Meroo Meadow with road works resulting in a single lane of traffic all the way from Bomaderry to Berry.
The Transport Management Centre reported that alone was adding 25 minutes to the journey.
Delays were also being experienced for northbound traffic travelling through Albion Park Rail and on the Princes Motorway between Waterfall and Heathcote.
And Northbound traffic was heavy on the Hume Motorway from Bargo to Wilton, adding at least 15 minutes to the trip home.
The Transport Management Centre said all major roads returning to Sydney were affected by the long weekend traffic by lunch time on Monday.
In the Blue Mountains eastbound traffic was heavy from Mount Victoria to Blackheath and Medlow Bath on the Great Western Highway, adding at least 35 minutes extra travel time.
In the Hunter and on the Central Coast southbound traffic was heavy all afternoon on the Pacific Highway through Heatherbrae and Raymond Terrace. There were major delays between Raymond Terrace and Hexham.
There was also heavy traffic on the New England Highway between Hexham and Beresfield. Southbound traffic was heavy on the M1 Pacific Motorway from Ryhope through to Morisett. While Mooney Mooney to Mt White was affected by two crashes late on Monday morning.
Traffic was also slow between Brooklyn and Berowra to Wahroonga with the journey taking an additional 40 minutes for motorists travelling between the Central Coast and Sydney.
Snow and ice on some of the higher altitude roads were also causing problems in some parts of the state.
