Salvo's public relations and fundraising coordinator Karen Walker said despite the uncertainty around what was happening with COVID-19 at the time the annual doorknock still managed to raise more than $190,000 during May and June.
Funds raised will be used to support Carinya Women's and Children's Service, The First Floor Program and providing life's basic needs of food, clothing and shelter to those who have struggled financially and sought help from the Salvo's.
"We are thrilled with the amount raised, particularly by those in the business community and through the events hosted by our volunteers," Mrs Walker said.
"This level of community generosity is normally only achieved through a combination of our business community contributions and our annual doorknock but this year our doorknock was curtailed by COVID so our respective committees hosted a highly successful business appeal and launch whilst we also collected via community collection spots at shopping centres, Bunnings, sporting grounds, online via our digital collection pages and through our own retail network of Salvos Stores.
"We are thrilled with the amount raised particularly by those in the business community and through the events hosted by our volunteers from Helensburgh to Gerringong. Salvos Stores alone raised more than double their expectation.
"We would like to thank many of those that assisted us with fundraising. Groups such as Rotary, Lions and the athletes from the Illawarra Academy of Sport as well as the hundreds of volunteers that collected with buckets and at community collection spots on our behalf. We would like to particularly thank our Business Appeal Committee and our Residential Appeal Committee without whom none of this would be possible.
"'Due to COVID more people than ever are coming to us for assistance who have previously not required our support" Mrs Walker said.
"Through these funds, many lives will be changed and transformed in the Illawarra."
