The money is being used to provide access to online learning and educational platforms, including reading and literacy programs for local students.
It will also help to buy new laptop computers and tablets for local school students who may not already own one so they can access online learning.
Vice president operations Wayne Bull said COVID-19 had impacted local students and forced many families across the region into home schooling.
"The funding will be a huge boost for students and local schools," he said.
"The schools receiving the money are Farmborough Road Public School; Mount Kembla Public School; Figtree High School; Figtree Heights Public School; Unanderra Public School and Nareena Hills Public School.
"The funding for the schools has been drawn from South32 IMC's Dendrobium Community Enhancement Program established in 2002 to support community projects and initiatives in the local area surrounding Dendrobium Mine."
Three cents is contributed to the program from every tonne of saleable coal it produces.
Nareena Hills Public School principal Giselle Coltman said the funding helped the school purchase two online programs that provide a comprehensive range of activities to help build our students' mathematical skills.
"They teach concepts in a fun, motivating way, and we think these programs will be a huge success at our school."
