The final stage of works on the $20million Wollongong City Council project began this week, with the eastern end of the mall partly blocked to allow contractors to begin removing the concrete foundations of the fountains, which were demolished last year.
Trees, seating and planter boxes near the former amphitheatre site will then be demolished.
This will make way for new paving, as well as new seats, lighting and other furniture.
During the work, the produce and creative traders market will continue to offer 50 stalls, selling fresh food, international meals, desserts and handmade goods from 9am to 3pm every Friday.
The layout of the markets will change weekly as the refurbishment progresses. The project should be complete by November.
