Cricket is the nation's biggest junior summer sport and kids in our region can start learning the basic skills through three specific tiers of development, plus the traditional Saturday morning competition.
The development begins with the popular MILO in2CRICKET program for the youngest players, followed by the MILO T20 Blast, which features Twenty20 cricket with fun matches and a soft ball.
The third level of junior development is Junior Blast, with players getting a taste of wearing helmets and pads and introducing players to a possible pathway of junior representative cricket.
Illawarra's traditional junior competition runs on Saturday mornings for under 11s through to under 16s and begins after the school holidays in early October. The older-age groups look forward to pairing with South Coast again in the combined comp.
In a new initiative Cricket Illawarra, in partnership with a Big Bash League franchise, is holding a mid-week evening junior competition called the Sydney Sixers Midweek T20 Junior Cup.
This is open to young cricketers who might not be available for Saturday mornings. Also, a specific girls-only comp called the Sixers Girls Cricket League is hoped to be played as T20 games on Sunday mornings.
Illawarra clubs have already held some registration days, but parents are still encouraged to join a club by visiting cricket illawarra.nsw.cricket.com.au or through playcricket.com.au by entering their postcode.
