A UOW staff member received information about a threat about 10.20am on Monday and alerted security.
The university’s campus-wide alert system was activated, with staff and students initially evacuated from every building across its Keiraville precinct.
The threat was later isolated to Building 19, the arts building, where officers and UOW staff conducted a sweep of the area.
Buildings in other parts of the campus were able to resume normal operations.
Students and staff were allowed to return to Building 19 about 11.30am, when the incident was resolved.
Police from the Miranda Local Area Command visited a home in Caringbah on Tuesday and arrested a 50-year-old man.
It will be alleged the Caringbah man was responsible for the phone call.
Inspector Mark Walker, from Wollongong police, said a mobile phone was seized from the home.
The man was later charged with using a carriage service to make a hoax threat.
He was given conditional bail and will appear in Sutherland Local Court on March 2.
