The teen’s bike collided head-on with a Volkswagen on Lawrence Hargrave Drive, near Toxteth Avenue, about 7.15pm on Sunday.
The teenager and his bike went underneath the car, police said.
He suffered significant injuries, mainly to his lower body.
A police investigation into the matter is underway.
However, police have been unable to speak to the injured man, who will undergo mandatory blood and alcohol testing as part of his hospital experience.
He was transported by ambulance to Wollongong Hospital and later transferred to St George Hospital.
Early indications are that excess speed was not a factor in the collision, according to police.
