The federal government should have the Maldon-Dombarton rail line as a “first and major project” for funding announced in this week’s budget.

In Tuesday’s budget there was a $10 billion National Rail Program.
Advocacy group Illawarra First believes, although the long-awaited freight rail line was not specifically mentioned, it should be a funding priority for the federal government.

“We are talking about connecting Australia’s largest economy – Sydney, the third largest economy in western Sydney and the Illawarra, NSW’s third largest economy,” executive director Chris Lamont said.
“Sub-standard rail infrastructure between Sydney and the Illawarra has been an impediment to economic activity, work and leisure opportunities for residents of the Illawarra and Sydney,”
