NSW Ambulance paramedics collected the 34-year-old man from an Avondale Road, Penrose, unit about 5.40pm on Sunday.
Once inside the ambulance, he allegedly began behaving erratically, kicking and hitting out at his surrounds.
The ambulance pulled into a service station on the Princes Highway at Albion Park Rail, where paramedics got out and called for police assistance.
Police allege the man damaged a data terminal inside the ambulance.
He was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with malicious damage.
He has since been released on conditional bail and is due to appear before Albion Park Local Court on October 6.
