The couple – a 80-year-old man and a woman believed aged in her 70s – came unstuck on Corrimal Street about 6.30pm Sunday.
Milena Gilmore was one of numerous residents who came to their aid after hearing a loud bang on the street. “We ran outside and couldn’t see anything," she said. “But then my partner saw a set of lights in the creek.
“There was no water in the creek but it was damp. We couldn’t even get them out.”
Residents stayed with the pair until they were freed by emergency services.
“There were about seven or eight people helping,” Ms Gilmore said.
“They were talking to them, asking their names and stuff until police arrived.
“The man looked in a bad way.
“A lady had her hand through the window, just to comfort them.”
An ambulance rescue helicopter landed at nearby Tarrawanna soccer oval. The man was airlifted to St George Hospital, where he remained on Monday in a stable condition.
The woman traveled by road ambulance to Wollongong Hospital, and has since been discharged.
