About 20 firefighters arrived at the site near Aragan Circuit in Bulli around 8pm to find a timber and corrugated iron structure well alight and flames spreading through the tops of nearby trees.
Bulli station officer David Martin said crews concentrated their fire attack so as to protect the surrounding structures at the tent embassy.
The Mercury understands a man arrived home to find his home alight and had lost everything he owned in the fire.
An investigation into the cause of the blaze, which is unknown at this stage, will commence on Wednesday morning.
“The fire brigade together with police will bring in detectives and the Fire Investigation Unit to try to piece together how the blaze started,” Officer Martin said.
There have been a number of fires in the area in the past month.
Officer Martin said a recent hazard reduction performed by the Aboriginal community accounted for one of the blazes.
It is understood the burn-off was conducted in consultation with NSW Fire and Rescue.
