Illawarra riders bound for Canberra police memorial

The annual Wall to Wall: Ride for Remembrance honours the sacrifice of fallen Australian police and serves as a fundraiser for Police Legacy. 

The Southern Region contingent, departing Kiama Police Station about 9am, has grown from 12 riders to 200 since 2012, said Lake Illawarra Police inspector and event rider, Paul Allman. 

The group will travel to a ceremony at the National Police Memorial in Canberra, joining up with different contingents along the way, until the pack reaches around 2500.

“For us it’s all about mateship, it’s about remembering those guys who have made the ultimate sacrifice, given up their life in the line of duty,” Insp Allman said. 

“We go down to Canberra, we pay our respects, we have a beautiful ceremony at the National Police Remembrance site. It’s also about raising money for Police Legacy - for those kids left behind, that need education that need some time put into them, and trips like Kokoda track and their ongoing education.”

Event organisers have this year partnered with the Centre for Road Safety. 

“We travel down there safely, we get back safely,” Insp Allman said. “Motorcycles can be part of the community. They are safe when they’re ridden safely.”
