The pursuit was sparked when officers tried to stop a car southbound on the M1 Princes Motorway at Berkeley just before 3pm.
Lake Illawarra duty officer Inspector Brian Pedersen said police will allege the 30-year-old man behind the wheel failed to stop.
Inspector Pedersen said the car left the motorway via the Kanahooka Road exit, where it collided with another vehicle and “reversed harshly” into a police car before driving off.
Officers ended the chase to check on the occupants of the other car involved in the crash, but the man’s car was spotted by officers in another police vehicle a short time later.
“The two police recognised the driver of the car,” Inspector Pedersen said.
Members of the public then alerted police to a car that had been abandoned on Avondale Road at Dapto.
The man, who Inspector Pedersen said was wanted for a number of offences, was arrested after being found in the garage of a nearby unit.
He was charged with multiple offences and refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Friday.
The police vehicle sustained minor damage in the incident. The other car involved in the Kanahooka Road collision was towed from the scene.
The man’s car was extensively damaged and seized by police.
